Return-to-Duty for CDL Drivers

DOT SAP Evaluations

As a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), I provide step-by-step evaluations for individuals who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations. My goal is to protect the public and guide employees to meet compliance requirements and complete the Return to Duty (RTD) process.

How to Return to Duty After a DOT Violation

If you’ve received a drug or alcohol violation, you’re currently prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). But this doesn’t mean the end of your career. Here's how to get back on the road—step by step:

STEP 1

Register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse

Visit the Clearinghouse Website and create your account.
📌 You’ll need your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and contact information.

Click here to learn step by step in how to register.

STEP 2

Choose a DOT-Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)

Designate a SAP listed in the Clearinghouse—or work with someone like me.
📌 I’ll provide an evaluation and recommend the right course of treatment or education.

STEP 3

Complete the SAP-Recommended Program

Attend the required sessions, whether it’s education, counseling, or treatment.
📌 Once complete, I’ll re-evaluate your progress and let your employer know when you're ready for testing.

STEP 4

Take the Return-to-Duty (RTD) Test

Helvetica Light is an easy-to-read font, with tall and narrow letters, that works well on almost every site.

STEP 5

Step 5: Complete Follow-Up Testing

Even after returning to duty, you’ll need to complete a follow-up testing schedule.
📌 I’ll outline a plan tailored to your situation and help you stay compliant.
